SUSE Manager 4 Deployment and Initial Configuration
This course is intended to introduce students to the purpose, features, and benefits of SUSE Manager (SUMA) 4.x. The course presents the architecture of a SUMA system and the requirements for successfully installing these architectural components.
You will learn how to deploy and configure these architectural components of a SUSE Manager (SUMA) 4.x system step by step. Concretely, you will learn how to install and configure the SUMA Server, all types of SUMA Proxy Servers and the Salt Minion code for the target client servers.
This training helps you set up a functional SUMA system to begin exploring the myriad of management capabilities that SUMA offers to managed server clients. Regardless of the size of your organization, this course will get you up and running with a complete SUSE Manager 4.x system.
This course prepares students for the SUSE Certified Deployment Specialist (SCDS) certification exam in SUSE Manager 4.

Who should participate
This course is intended for those who are new to SUSE Manager. In particular:
- System architects who lead the implementation of SUSE Manager within their organization
- Linux system administrators who want an efficient and effective way to manage their Linux servers centrally rather than individually as a group of discrete servers.
Prerequisites
Participants must possess:
- Familiarity with the Linux command line
- At least one year of Linux system administration experience
- Bash scripting skills.
We recommend that you have a SUSE Certified Administrator (SCA) certification in SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 15 or higher, or an equivalent level of experience.
The objectives of this course are as follows:
- Understand the challenges of systems management and the need for a comprehensive systems management solution.
- Understand the benefits of SUSE Manager 4.3
- Learn about the new product features introduced in SUSE Manager 4.3
- Understand the different levels of a fully implemented SUSE Manager system and know the major software components of SUSE Manager and their relationship to each other.
- Understand the purpose of Hub Server in large SUSE Manager deployments.
- Learn the hardware and software requirements for installing the various levels of the SUSE Manager system.
- Understand how to perform an online and disconnected installation of SUSE Manager Server
- Understand the purpose of the two phases (Initial Setup and SUMA Administrative Setup) of the SUMA installation procedure.
- Learn how to run the Initial Setup if your SUMA Server was installed in “text only” or in “graphics mode”.
- Perform the SUMA administrative setup using the SUMA web interface.
- Understand the importance of the SUSE Customer Center (SCC) in providing patches and updates for your SUMA Server.
- Learn how to synchronize SCC-provided content with your SUMA Server using the web interface wizard and be able to monitor the progress of the synchronization process.
- Understand pre-installation issues and hardware and software requirements for the three different types of SUMA 4.3 Proxy Servers
- Install a traditional SUMA 4.3 Proxy Server and register the Proxy as a Salt Minion.
- Understand how to configure a traditional SUMA 4.3 Proxy Server to function as a Proxy Server for downstream client servers.
- Learn how to install the Podman and Helm-based versions of SUMA Proxy Server that are new in SUSE Manager 4.3.
- Understand the purpose of the customer registration process and what happens during registration.
- Understand the planning that needs to be done before registering target client systems, especially how to make the contents of the SCC channel available once the systems have been registered.
- Learn how to manually create the Bootstrap repositories needed for customer registration.
- Create and configure System Groups and Activation Keys and learn best practices for doing so.
- Learn the different methods that can be used to register target client servers.
- Register clients using several methods
- Understand what a Salt Key is and methods for accepting Salt Keys waiting on your SUMA server.
- Understand how to create and implement a Content Lifecycle Management strategy to manage patches and updates of registered client systems.
The labs will run on SUSE Manager v4.3.2.
